Bible Notes Online - Psalms 83 - ESV
Commentary

The ungodly attack Israel; Asaph's final Psalm (of 12).

v1: As in Ps 79;80, the psalmist looks to God to act on behalf of His people.

v2-4: Enemies of God's people, scheming to destroy Israel. They are deceitful and malicious, they are numerous and powerful.

v5-8: The nations are named; Canaanites, such as the Philistines, and other Semitic peoples, such as Edom and Moab. Gebal (Byblos, of Bablyon), and Assyria came from slightly further away. Even so, these were nations surrounding Israel.

v9-12: The prayer to God, 'deal with them,' as past victories are recalled. The schemes of the enemy did not change; they coveted the land flowing with milk and honey.

v13-18: The Lord acts to glorify His own name, to shame His enemies, and to declare His name among the nations, that they might seek Him, and acknowledge that He alone is God.
