Bible Notes Online - Psalms 72 - ESV
Commentary

A prophetic psalm, declaring Christ to be king, pictured by Solomon.

v1-4: God gave wisdom to Solomon, not before he became king, but at the right time; this is God's own wisdom in the timing as well as the giving of the gift. It is God's justice and God's righteousness that is essential, for "your people" and "your afflicted ones," since those who belong to God are those who suffer in this world.

The twofold blessing is prosperity and justice. In this world we suffer poverty and injustice; in eternity, Christ will reverse these things.

v5-7: Christ's eternal reign, see Is 9.7; a reign of righteousness and peace. What Solomon brought (or continued) was merely a foretaste if this.

v8-11: Universal dominion, all peoples and nations are included, they will be subject to Him. All will be obliged to submit to Him.

Gifts brought to the Christ child prefigure the glory of all the nations being brought to Him.

v12-14: The reign of mercy and compassion.

v15: Gifts brought to Him; and prayers brought to Him.

v16: Fruitfulness throughout His reign.

v17: The promises to Abraham are fulfilled in Christ, as all nations will be blessed. Every knee shall bow to Him.

v18-19: The greatness of God will be manifest in Christ's reign.

v20: Many of the first two books are Psalms were written by David. This verse closes the second book.
