Bible Notes Online - Psalms 124 - ESV
Commentary

Looking back with thankfulness after God's deliverance.

v1-2: The psalmist looks back. In Jer 7.4, the Temple of the Lord had become the object of faith, instead of the place of worship. The Psalm speaks of a real, corporate, experience of God. Our lives are different because of God. He is not inactive nor impotent.

v3: Unless God had been there, all would have been lost.

v4-5: Compare Ps 129. The people would have been overwhelmed; our trust is in God who has delivered; and in God who will deliver. Unless God intervenes, there is no deliverance.

v6-8: Gratitude to God, Ps 121.2. He is our Help, the maker of heaven and earth.
