Bible Notes Online - Psalms 16 - ESV
Commentary

The theme of personal confidence in God. A Messianic Psalm, predicting Christ's resurrection.

v1-2: Unless I have God I have nothing, Rom 7.18. The Psalmist's prayer, 'Preserve me,' indicates utter trust in God; he had no 'Plan B,' no where else to turn, and he sought no other refuge.

v3: David reflects God's delight in the godly. The Christian is part of a community, sharing God-likeness with others.

v4: Keeping clear of idolatry, not even mentioning the name of others gods. There is a guarantee of sorrow instead of joy for idolaters.

v5-6: The Lord our inheritance, gracious and generous, a land of good things, a life worth living. The good things in our lives are no accident, but the blessing of God upon our lives. Our inheritance is God Himself; Heb 13.5-6.

v7: In relationship with God there is communication, our praise to Him, His wisdom for us; as a result, our hearts can instruct us.

v8: The deliberate choice to trust in God; He is close by, so we will not be shaken; also Ps 15.5.

v9: Words of confidence in God, even into death itself. These words are used of Christ, Acts 2.25-28; 13.35.

v10: Jesus' body did not decay nor perish; He trusted in the Father, and fully obeyed Him; death had no claim over Him.

v11: Pleasures in Christ, who is at God's right hand; 'Solid joys and lasting treasure, none but Zion's children know,'
