Bible Notes Online - Psalms 112 - ESV
Commentary

The security of the godly. There is much here to point us to Christ and His character.

v1: As in Ps 95, praise is linked with obedience. We cannot truly praise God unless we are obedient to His commands. See also Ps 111.10; the man who loves and fears God will want to obey Him. These things were true of Christ, whose meat and drink were to do the will of God.

v2: His seed will be blessed; the blessing upon godly Israelites; the fruit of Christ's obedience and death.

v3: Wealth and riches, righteousness forever; such were the blessings promised by God upon faithful Israelites. Christ has brought in a kingdom of eternal righteousness.

v4: Gracious and compassionate and righteous, just like God, Ps 111.4. Even in darkness, God is these things; even in darkness, we should be godly. Christ came as a root out of dry ground, and maintained His righteous ways in the midst of a disobedient people.

v5: Man of discretion and justice and generosity; there is something open-handed about the godly man. This is consistent with Christ's ministry.

v6-8: Security in life; there may be bad news and enemies, but the godly man is safe, trusting in the Lord. He will share in eternal righteousness. His strength of life is not by personal effort, but by faith in God.

v9: The generous man, quoted in 2 Cor 9.9, encouraging Christians to give; again, there is a blessing in being open-handed.

v10: The wicked will fade away, having no Saviour.
