Bible Notes Online - Ezekiel 4 - ESV
Commentary

God gives signs to the people, as the prophet proclaims the word through dramatic means. There are two signs in this chapter; the siege, and the defiled food.

v1-3: The sign of the siege, describing what is happening in Jerusalem.  The iron wall indicates the barrier between God and His people.

v4-8: Ezekiel's costly ministry, as he lies still, first on one side, and then on the other, for 430 days. This may cover the time of his prophecies in chapters 5-7. The timing of 8.1 is around 430 days later than this prophecy. The prophecy may have been fulfilled when Judah endured the loss of the Davidic monarchy from 597 BC, when Jerusalem was captured by Nebuchadnezzar, until 167BC, when the Maccabees re-established the kingdom.

v9-11: Ezekiel has rations of food and water. Whilst it is a practical arrangement for him, it speaks of the famine coming for the people, and that they will have to endure shortage of food involuntarily.

v12-15: Ezekiel's food is defiled. He baulks at the command to cook using human excrement. The message is clear, though, that the people would be forced to eat defiled food, for God will scatter them throughout the nations.

v16-17: The people fell into desperate straits because of the severity of the famine.
