Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 33 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Manasseh was born during Hezekiah's 'extra' 15 years. He had seen little of his father's earlier devotion to God.

v3-9: The depth of Manasseh's sins; he desecrated the temple by placing idols in it; this was the place where God had put His Name; the worship of idols is not the same as the worship of God.

Manasseh not only copied the pagan nations, but he exceeded their sinfulness. Compare 1 Cor 5.1.

v10-13: Manasseh's suffering and repentance. Initially, he paid no attention to the Lord's words, presumably through prophets (as in v18). The king of Assyria captured Manasseh, and took him to Babylon. In his distress, Manasseh cried out to God, showing deep sorrow for his sins. In His mercy, God accepted his repentance, and restored him to Jerusalem. Compare Dan 4.32-37.

v14-17: Manasseh's repentance was seen in his desire to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem, and the removal of idols, and the reinstatement of offerings to the True God. It seems he did not remove all the idols, since Josiah had many to remove and destroy (ch 34).

Even so, the people, having learned to sacrifice at high places, continued to do so.

v18-20: The writer has been brief. There were many more words, of the prophets (seers) who spoke God's words to Manasseh, and of Manasseh himself, as he repented of his sins. The writer has made the matter clear: the seriousness of Manasseh's sins was obvious; the shock of his removal to Babylon; the reality of his repentance; and God's restoration.

v21-25: The short and evil reign of Amon. He learned from his father's sins, but not from his repentance. His officials conspired against him and killed him.
