Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 26 - ESV
Commentary

v1-5: Like Amaziah, Uzziah started well. Zechariah the prophet was a strength to him, and encouraged him to seek the Lord God.

v6-8: Uzziah enjoyed military victories against the Philistines, the Arabs, and the Meunites, and subjugated the Ammonites.

v9-10: Uzziah strengthened the wall of Jerusalem, and prospered in farming, both livestock and fields and vineyards.

v11-15: Military strength and ingenuity; Uzziah had a sizeable and well-equipped army.

v16: As often happens, success led to pride; this was true of Rehoboam (12.1). In days of success and prosperity, spiritual things may receive less priority in our lives. Our walk with the Lord must be able to withstand success and failure, victory and disappointment, prosperity and poverty. The key is constant reliance on the all-powerful God.

v17-18: Azariah the priest rightly rebuked the King. Nathan the prophet had rebuked David, and Elijah had rebuked Ahab; no leader can be above rebuke for his disobedience.

Uzziah had become involved in something outside his responsibility and calling, and suffered the consequences. He was not guilty of idolatry, and thus remained distinct from the kings of Israel.

v19-21: The judgment of God brought leprosy upon Uzziah; and he was unable to rule. For years he lived in isolation, useless to the nation. His son Jotham ruled in his stead.

v22-23: When Uzziah died, Isaiah saw the Lord on the throne; no change there, for God's throne is never vacant; He remains in control.
