Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 16 - ESV
Commentary

v1: Baasha's attack involved building the city of Ramah to prevent trade coming and going.

v2-3: Instead of trusting in the Lord, Asa relied upon the King of Aram (Syria) to remove the threat of Baasha. We may walk faithfully in obedience to God, and then fail to trust in a particular situation. In this, Asa provides a very human example for us.

v4-6: Asa's scheme was successful, in that it led to Baasha's retreat.

v7-9: The prophet Hanani brought a rebuke to Asa. He had relied on the strength of man, not on God. He had previously seen a wonderful victory, which should have taught him that God is indeed faithful. At this point, Asa's heart was not fully committed to God. As a result of this, Asa would lose the peace he had previously enjoyed.

v10: Asa reacted badly to the prophet, putting him in prison. He also mistreated some of the people.

v11-14: In his last few years, Asa failed to seek the Lord. He suffered a painful foot condition, but did not seek healing from the Lord's hand, and suffered for some two years as a result. It is so often the way, even of believers, to doubt God and His power, and therefore to fail to seek His blessing.
