Bible Notes Online - 2-Chronicles 23 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: In time, Jehoiada "showed his strength"; he was evidently united with Jehosheba, his wife, in his support for Joash, and in seeing him reign as king. They both risked their lives in preserving Joash, and in bringing him forward to be announced and anointed. They waited 6 years (22.12), with Joash kept in hiding.

Jehoiada had won over the captains of hundreds, and the Levites, and the chief fathers. This was important, so that the new king had sufficient support. Verse 1 names five military commanders who identified with Jehoiada and Joash.

Jehoiada proclaimed God's order, "the king's son shall reign", for that is what God had promised.

v4-7: The soldiers had to protect the temple, where the king would be proclaimed and anointed.

v8-10: Those who would have been off duty joined with those on duty, to provide the protection needed. Ordinarily there was a shift system, ensuring a consistent level of protection. For this special occasion, all the soldiers had to be available.

v11: The important moment, as Joash was proclaimed king. The wording here is quite specific – Joash the king’s son was made king.

v12-13: Athaliah was not accustomed to going to the temple, having pursued idolatrous religion. Only now, when the 'usurper' arose, she went to the temple. She shouted “Treason!” although her own dealings earlier had been much worse, see 22.10-11.

v14-15: Jehoiada commanded that any who followed Athaliah were to be put to death with her.

v16-17: There was a temple of Baal in Jerusalem. This was destroyed, and Mattan, the chief priest killed. The existence of the temple indicated the corruption that had invaded Judah. The destruction of the temple indicated the willingness of the new administration to put things right. When we identify sins and compromises in our lives, we must put things right, repenting of our sins, and giving God proper place.

v18-21: Levites were appointed to continue temple worship. The people rejoiced, and the city was quiet, since Athaliah was dead, and Joash now reigned.
