Bible Notes Online - 1-Chronicles 7 - ESV
Commentary

v1-5: Issachar, the stray donkey, Gen 49.14. Here were mighty men of valour, ready for war. The tribe is listed here in relation to its readiness for war. The numbers of fighting men increased with time.

v6-12: The total army of Benjamin was divided into three; 22,034 under Bela, 20,200 under Beker (Becher), and 17,200 under Jediael.

v13: The family of Naphtali merits just one verse.

v14-19: The family of Manasseh, living west of the Jordan.

v20-29: The family of Ephraim includes a story of tragedy, with the deaths of two sons. The incident may have happened in Egypt, with Gittites fleeing there in the famine (Gen 47.13); from this tragedy came a saviour, Joshua.

It may have been that other tribes also experienced tragedy; other men were named Beriah, see v31; 8.13.

v30-40: The family of Asher.
