Bible Notes Online - 1-Chronicles 26 - ESV
Commentary

v1-19: There were three families who provided personnel as gatekeepers;

  • Obed-Edom, plus 62 (v8), family listed in v4-7;
  • Meshelemiah, plus 18 (v9), family listed v2-3; and
  • Hosah, plus 13 (v11), family listed v10-11.

Thus there were 96 in total. Each day required 22 (v17-18).

These had an important task, having duties like their brethren, to serve in the house of the Lord God (v12). Here were able men with strength for the work (v8), and others were "very capable"; Zechariah was a wise counsellor (v14).

v20-28: Other Levites were set apart to oversee the treasuries. For decades Israel had gathered spoil, under Samuel, Saul, Abner, Joab, as well as David. There was clearly a large amount, since David was able to give much for the building of the temple.

v29-32: Overseeing the affairs of the nation. Kenaniah and Hashabiah and Jeriah were judges and officials over different parts of Israel.
