Bible Notes Online - 1-Chronicles 28 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: David gathered the various officials together to announce his plans for building the temple. He acknowledged God's hand upon him; 1 Cor 4.7; God is the source of all good things. In particular, David had to change his mind, putting aside his own plans; this is an indication of David's closeness to the Lord, and submission to Him.

v4: God had chosen David and his line; and He preserved that line; and He would preserve that line for centuries, since Christ was born in the same line. It is not arrogant to speak in this way; David simply recognised the calling of God on his life.

v5: David insisted that Solomon be king after him, see 1 Kings 1.29-30. He did this because God had chosen Solomon as king.

Throughout this chapter we read of David’s concern for the future. This is important, as we naturally consider only our own affairs. His words to Solomon, v8, underline this.

v6-7: Solomon had the task of building the temple, again because God had commanded. Solomon spent years on this great task. God made promises to Solomon, about the establishing of his kingdom; however, this depended on Solomon's obedience to God's commands.

v8: David charged Solomon to a deliberate commitment to obedience, requiring effort and dedication. This would lead to blessings and inheritance for his "descendants for ever". David did not assume that each generation would be obedient, but he did pray that they would be. He had set an example, now it was for others to follow that example.

v9-10: The challenge to Solomon; to know God, to serve God, to seek God. David's desire was that God would give him a loyal heart and a willing mind. The Lord looks at out attitude towards Him; that must be spiritual; spiritual work demands spiritual attitudes. Solomon had a work to do, and he was expected it to do it with integrity and faithfulness.

v11-19: David's detailed plans for the temple, which had been given by the hand of the Lord. The temple would always be remembered as Solomon's temple; David let another take the credit; how different from the unspiritual attitude that seeks praise from others.

The plans included the layout of the temple (v11-12), the roles of the Levites (v13); and David also prepared sufficient materials (v14-18). All this, said David, was given by the hand of the Lord God.

v20-21: Encouragement to Solomon. God is faithful, and He is all we need. Since David was speaking in front of his officials, he reminded Solomon that all these people were ready and willing to serve the son, just as they had served the father.
