Bible Notes Online - 1-Chronicles 2 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Israel's family, picking up the line from 1.34. Since most of the O.T. is the history of the nation of Israel, this is a key part of the genealogies listed.

v3-4: Judah's immorality; he had three sons borne by a Canaanite woman, and two more by his own daughter-in-law. Gen 38 relates that Er and Onan followed his bad example.

v5-9: The family of Perez. This included Achan, a troubler in Israel, who brought death to others (Josh 7). The title was also used of Elijah (1 Kings 18.17).

Judah's family, including the line of the kings, continues to 4.23. This follows Chronicles' emphasis on the southern kingdom.

v10-12: The line from Ram to Jesse.

v13-17: The family of Jesse.

v18-20: Caleb, son of Hezron.

v21-24: Hezron, son of Perez, married into the tribe of Manasseh.

v25-41: A list of 25 generations from Judah to Elishama. This compares with 24 to Ahaz, the line of the kings. Thus, these verses lead to the time of the captivity of the northern kingdom.

v42-55: The family of Caleb. Since Judah inherited a large area of land, their population was large. From Caleb came the Ithrites and the Netophathites (2 Sam 23.38).
