Bible Notes Online - Job 8 - ESV
Commentary

v1-7: Bildad's theology, like Eliphaz', is harsh. He blatantly accuses Job of wrong-doing.

He says that God is just and fair, and that Job's sons had sinned against God, and had suffered accordingly. Since He punished them, He is also punishing Job. His vision is of a God of retribution and merciless judgment; he neglects the truth of God's mercy.

The reward of repentance; God would give great blessing, much greater than Job had previously seen. But, this begs the question, from what should Job repent?

v8-10: Bildad looks to a previous age for his authority; he says that tradition and antiquity are always right.

v11-19: Bildad describes those who turn away from God; the hypocrite, the evil-doer, the wicked. He infers that Job must fit into these categories. He illustrates his thinking with;

  • the reed that quickly withers;
  • the spider's web that is soon gone;
  • the plant growing on rocks that leaves no mark.

v20-22: Following from v5-7; God would honour repentance, and bless Job abundantly.
