Bible Notes Online - Isaiah 25 - ESV
Commentary

A new section, to chapter 35, addressing Israel specifically.

v1: God is Great, and His people are called to praise Him.

v2-3: Great in judgment, esp. against the unbelieving Gentiles; they are foreigners, strong peoples, ruthless nations. Ultimately, these peoples will honour God.

v4-5: God's punishment of the ungodly is consistent with His compassion towards the poor and needy. The human order is reversed, as the poor put their trust in God, and the ungodly are judged. The people of God are to be like God in this respect. Kindness towards the poor is an essential mark of those who love God.

v6-8: God's faithfulness to His people. The feast of "rich food," abundance and excellent. Israel will be restored, its shame removed. The Lord God has promised, and none can annul.

God will swallow up death forever, a foreshadowing of Christ's resurrection.

v9: The people respond in praise to God their Saviour.

v10-12: The pride of Moab brought down. The trickery of their hands will come to nothing. Moab is representative of the Gentile nations which will attack Jerusalem, but will be brought down. Their rebellion against God and His people will be ended. All nations will be defeated.
