Bible Notes Online - Exodus 38 - ESV
Commentary

v1-7: They made the bronze altar for burnt offering (25.1-8). There were horns (v2) on which the sacrifice was bound.

v8: The laver (25.17-21) was made of bronze mirrors. This is judgment through the word of God, which shows us what we are really like (Jam 1.22-25).

v9-20: The Court of the Tabernacle, 27.9-19.

v21-23: The summary of the work; Bezalel and Oholiab completed the work as instructed. Ithamar, the son of Aaron, recorded the amounts of materials used.

v24-29: The amounts of materials are striking. One is reminded that these had all to be carried by hand.

Using the standard that there were 3000 shekels for 1 talent; there were 1.63 tons of gold (87,730 shekels), 5.6 tons of silver (301,775 shekels, being ½ shekel for each man, see 30.13-15), and 4 tons of bronze (212,400 shekels). The metal along weighed 12 tons, and the acacia wood, which was heavy, would have added much more. (NIV weights are less by 1/3rd.)
