Bible Notes Online - Exodus 33 - ESV
Commentary

v1: In spite of what had happened, God's promises still remained, as Moses had prayed (32.13). The people continued their journey, for God still had a destiny for them.

v2: God's angel would go up with the people, for God was still committed to them, see 23.20; 32.34.

v3: God's people would still inherit the land flowing with milk and honey.

v4-6: The Lord had sent Moses and His angel, for had He come amongst them, He would have destroyed them. The people stripped off their ornaments, for this was not a time for rejoicing.

v7: Moses' tent, erected outside the camp, had to become the meeting place. The construction of the Tabernacle had now been delayed, since the people had displayed a rejection of God and His standards. The Tabernacle would have been set up at the centre of the camp.

v8: The people constantly saw Moses going into and out of the tent, where God was. This again was a testimony that God's presence was not with them. Moses was again shown to be God's chosen man.

v9-11: Moses thus spoke with the Lord "face to face". Joshua stayed in the tent, seeing also the presence of the Lord. Joshua was being prepared for future leadership.

In some way, God veiled Himself, for no man can see God (John 1.18; 1 John 4.12). See v20.

v12-13: Moses wanted more from God. He had been given the responsibility of leading a rebellious people, but struggled with that. Like Ezekiel, this was the task appointed to him by God (Ezek 2.7).

v14: "My Presence" would be sufficient for anyone!

v15: Progress is pointless without His Presence; the Angel was not enough for Moses, for only with the Lord is there mercy.

v16: God's presence with His people meant that they were separate from all other peoples.

v17: Moses' faith brought extra blessings from God "I am pleased with you"

v18: Moses' further request, to see the very glory of God. This is another indication that the face to face contact has to be understood in the light of other Scriptures (see John 1.18).

v19: The Lord's blessing, that Moses would indeed see something more. His goodness and His Name were to be declared. These words are quoted in Rom 9.15, where there are relevant to Paul's discussion on mercy. God is not unwilling to show mercy. We notice that God’s glory is seen in His mercy and goodness.

v20-23: God Himself protected Moses, with His hand, so that he would not die. Moses saw more, but not God's face. Even Moses could not see the face of God and live.
