Bible Notes Online - Numbers 29 - ESV
Commentary

v1-6: Feast of Trumpets, beginning the autumn series of Feasts. These have two important applications; one is to the future restoration of the Jews, for the previous Feasts have been fulfilled. The other is to Christians' future salvation, as God completes His gracious work in our lives.

v7-11: Day of Atonement.

v12-38: The Feast of Tabernacles was an eight day celebration, from Sabbath to Sabbath. The offerings were largely offerings of worship and consecration, although the daily sin offerings were a reminder of their sins, and therefore an encouragement to find forgiveness in God.

The regular sacrifices involved in excess of 1100 animals each year, in addition to any free will offerings. Thus, there was a real cost in worshipping God.

The numbers of daily sacrifices is interesting, with the reduction from 13 to 7, but totalling 70, representing the nations of the world. Others comment that the feast decreased in sanctity during the week, hence the lower number of sacrifices each day,.

v39: The Israelites were not restricted to these offerings; they were free to make voluntary offerings, and doubtless many did.
