Bible Notes Online - Judges 18 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Dan had an inheritance, Josh 19.40-48.

v5-6: The Danites made a request, seeking God's blessing on their journey. We have to question the devotion behind both the request and the answer, for these were not days of deep faith. No doubt they received the alleged approval from God.

v7: The people of Laish were not allied with anyone. There was great danger in this since, when difficulties arose, there was no deliverer (v28). For Christians, and individual churches, there is a similar danger. Whilst we may claim that there are none like us, that is folly and dangerous.

v14-20: The Danites arrived at Micah's house, which was on the way to Laish. They happily took the idols and forced the Levite to serve them as priest. This contrasts with the people's declaration of faithfulness to God, Josh 24.16-18,21,24.

v24-26: Micah had trusted in man-made religion, not in God; he lost that, and had nothing. And he could not insist that either the idols or the Levite be returned.

v27-29: The town of Laish had no ties with anyone, therefore they were vulnerable to attack. ‘Cross the river in a crowd, and the crocodiles won’t eat you.’ (Madagascar proverb)

v30-31: The Danites incorporated idolatry into their religion, and set up their own priests, it seems for several centuries until the captivity.
