Bible Notes Online - Judges 13 - ESV
Commentary

v1: Israel persistently turned to sin; the Philistines had entered the land earlier, 10.7. The oppression for 40 years was the longest of any outside oppression during the period of the Judges.

v2-3: Elsewhere God used unusual circumstances; here He used the impossible, i.e: a barren womb. The Angel appeared to Manoah's wife, who was presumably more receptive spiritually; this was also true of Mary in Luke 1.26-28.

Samson, like Jeremiah, John the Baptist, and Jesus Christ;

  • each was set apart from the womb;
  • each won a mighty victory single-handedly;
  • apart from Jeremiah, the message of the birth came first to the mother, or else the mother was more receptive to God's message.

v4-5: The son to be born was to be a Nazirite, Num 6.1-7. Samson was thus chosen by God from the womb, not from his birth; this was God's selection. It is interesting that even the mother's actions before he was born were important, see also v14. Samson was set apart by God for a special task. This is further proof, if any were needed, that the unborn child is a real person.

v6-7: Manoah's wife faithfully and accurately related what had happened. Here is submission and open-ness.

v8: Although Manoah prayed to God, the answer had already been given to his wife. He did ask the angel to “come again,” as a confirmation. God honoured the woman, in contrast the the prevailing culture which exalted male-ness.

v9-10: God graciously sent His Angel again, so that Manoah had an opportunity to speak with him.

v11-14: Manoah repeated his request, as in v8. The Angel's response was clear, Manoah's son was to be a Nazirite from the womb. There was specific responsibility upon the mother-to-be; her diet would affect her son’s well-being.

v15-16: The Angel was not the Lord God Himself; all worship must be directed to God.

v17-18: The name of the Angel was "wonderful" (margin); it may be that this was a 'theophany', an appearance of the Word, who became Jesus Christ. Appearances to Abraham (Gen 18), to Jacob (Gen 32.22-32), and in the burning furnace (Dan 3.24-26) may be seen in the same way.

v19-23: Manoah was troubled by the fact that they had seen the Angel (v22); his wife understood that they would not die, as their offerings were accepted.

It is not wrong for a wife to be more spiritual than her husband. The husband must give her proper respect to her.

v24-25: The baby, Samson was born, and the Spirit of God began to work in his life.
