Commentary

v3-4: Jacob refers to the blessing given in 35.11-12.

v5-7: Jacob had a special blessing for Joseph's sons; reflecting his special love for Joseph; "the prince among his brothers," 49.28.

v10: Jacob was almost blind; but he was sensitive to spiritual realities and to the Spirit of God; in v14 he gives the younger son the greater blessing.

v11: Jacob's joy; he has seen Joseph, and now he sees Joseph's sons.

v17-18: Joseph was unhappy that his father had blessed Ephraim above Manasseh; but Jacob insisted that this was God's will and way. Jacob himself had inherited the blessing of the first born, above Esau.
