Bible Notes Online - Genesis 42 - ESV
Commentary

The circumstances for Jacob and his family, still in Canaan, begin to change. The dreams of Joseph are nearing their fulfilment.

v2: The severity of the famine. Jacob feared that the family would die unless they found another source of food.

v6: The ten brothers bowed down to Joseph (37.7-8).

v7: Joseph recognised his brothers, but they did not recognise him.

v13: Joseph may not have seen Benjamin. The revelation that there are "twelve" brothers, not eleven is significant.

v15-17: The testing of the brothers; three days in prison, to consider Joseph's terms. In prophecy, there will be a testing upon Israel, as the nation is restored to God (Rev 1.7).

v18-20: Joseph had mercy on his brothers; "for I fear God". Only one of the brothers was to remain in prison, compared to nine originally (v16).

v21: The brothers became remorseful over their treatment of Joseph; their sin has found them out, even though committed years before.

v22: Reuben's attitude is more sensitive than the others' (37.21-22,29-30), yet he recognised his own guilt in the matter. He took the responsibility of the eldest son. Later he was willing to put his own sons as surety for Benjamin (v37).

v24: Joseph loved his brothers, and wept for them. But at this stage he did not make himself known to them.

v25: Joseph's mercy; he returned their money; i.e: he gave them grain, rather than selling it to them. This is part of their repentance and restoration. Joseph's actions made them feel guilty. In 43.23, he said, "I received your silver".

v38: Jacob was unwilling to have Benjamin sent. He made his sons wait some months, with Simeon in prison in Egypt, until he let them return.
