Bible Notes Online - Deuteronomy 24 - ESV
Commentary

v1-4: In Mark 10.4-6, the Lord Jesus said that these rules were provided "because of the hardness of your hearts". Even so, this reflects reality; things happen which displease God (as do unsolved murders; ch 21), but a provision is made to deal with the circumstances; this does not indicate that God approves of divorce, or of a series of relationships.

What is important is that we understand God's ways, and learn to apply them in everyday life.

v4: See Hos 3, where the prophet takes back his adulterous wife, demonstrating God's never ending love for His people.

v5: A 'honeymoon' period of one year, during which the husband was exempt from war, and from other duties.

v10-15: The various rules laid down demonstrate fairness and justice, especially to the poor; see also v19-22. We notice also the practice of paying hired workers daily, see Matt 20.8.

v16: Although children were affected by parental sins, they were not to be punished for them.

v19-22: The basic provision for the poor required a cost for the landowner (who is resumed not to be poor). When harvesting, he was to leave sheaves overlooked, and olives and grapes missed. There is an example in Ruth 2.2, 7.
