Bible Notes Online - Deuteronomy 2 - ESV
Commentary

v2-6: As the journey continued, the Israelites drew nearer to Canaan. The clear instructions were that they could not inherit the land of Esau (Edom). Esau was the brother of Jacob, and not a Canaanite. Moab (v9) and Ammon (v19) similarly had received an inheritance, given by the Lord. Each had dispossessed the previous inhabitants (v10-12, 20-23), and these included giants (v10,21, compare Num 13.33 and 1.28). Could not the Lord enable His own people to defeat giants and occupy their land!

The food and water from Esau had to be paid for - contrast the offer of spiritual blessings from God, Is 55.1, which are received without money and without price.

v7: "You have not lacked anything"; such was the power and faithfulness of God, even though the people frequently failed to trust Him.

v14-16: The wanderings for 38 years were God's judgment upon His unbelieving people. The 603,550 fighting men (Num 1.3-46) died during this time, to be replaced by a new generation. These verses are quite specific and accurate.
Once the last of “these fighting men” had died, the Lord spoke to Moses about moving on.

v25: The surrounding nations began to fear the Israelis; see also Josh 2.10-11; 9.9-10. This was the prelude to them taking over their land.

v37: The Lord had forbidden the Israelites from going to certain places; compare Acts 16.6-7. The reason here was that they were not to attack other Semitic peoples, such as Esau, Ammon, Moab, but only the Canaanites, being Hamitic.
