Bible Notes Online - Joshua 9 - ESV
Commentary

In Deut 7.1-4, God had warned Israel not to make a covenant with any Canaanite nation. This chapter relates how they failed to obey this command. Similarly, the Christian is not to be yoked with unbelievers. The enemies used two methods of attack; of power and deceit. The Christian is also subject to satanic attacks through temptation which may be blatant or subtle.

v1-2: The use of power and might. The kings of northern Canaan gathered together. Joshua coped much better with this sort of attack.

v3-6: The use of deceit. Gibeon was not far from Jericho and Ai, and they had heard of the defeat of those cities. They perhaps feared that they would be next (v24)!

v7-13: The deceit was maintained, in both word and appearance. The Gibeonites had heard of Israel's victories over the Amorite kings;

  • they claimed to fear the Lord God (compare Matt 7.21-23);
  • they sought to flatter Israel, by pretending to be ambassadors;
  • they wanted to associate with success (a bandwagon to jump on!).

By not referring to the victories at Jericho and Ai, they maintained the deception. The victories over the Amorites were some months earlier. Had they mentioned Jericho or Ai, they would have suggested that they did live closer.

There are those who may join a church for similar reasons. There must be real faith, real guidance, and real submission.

v14-15: The Israelites had made some enquiries of the Gibeonites, but failed to seek the Lord's counsel. They therefore made a covenant with them. This promise was later honoured by David; 2 Sam 21.1-9.

Although Joshua made an error here, there is a picture of Christ and His work for the church. He "made peace" by the blood of His cross, just as Joshua made peace. Those who make up the church are undeserving and worthy of death, just as the Gibeonites were. Christ gives us life, just as Joshua "let them live". Christ protects those who belong to Him, just as Joshua later fought to protect the Gibeonites.

v18-21: Joshua did not attack the Gibeonites, when he discovered they were Canaanites, even though many of his people grumbled. Joshua's solution was to make them woodcutters and water carriers. Israel kept their promise, even at cost to themselves.

It is said that Albert Schweitzer (Philosopher of the 19th and 20th centuries) first applied the phrase ‘hewers of wood and fetchers of water’ to black Africans. This misuse of this scripture helped to fuel the apartheid movement in South Africa.

v22-27: The Gibeonites had feared for their lives. They preferred slavery to death.
