Bible Notes Online - Joshua 17 - ESV
Commentary

v3-6: The situation of the daughters of Zelophehad; God had graciously given them an inheritance (Num 36), along with their family in Gilead.

v7-11: The description of the area allotted to the half tribe of Manasseh. There was some overlap between their territory and that of Ephraim; and Manasseh also owned towns situated within Asher and Issachar.

v12-13: The Canaanites were determined to dwell in the land. This was no surprise since the land was so fruitful. Therefore, effort was required to remove them, as in v18.

If sins are "determined to dwell" in our lives, then we must be determined to destroy them and cast them out.

v14-18: The children of Joseph said, "Give!" Joshua's reply put the responsibility back on them. A part of the land was allotted to them, but he Canaanites had to be driven out.

In Christ, we may have "great power " (see v17), but we must make every effort to receive blessing.

The enemy may be strong (v16,18), but we must trust in Christ, and be stronger.
