Bible Notes Online - Joshua 19 - ESV
Commentary

This chapter details the territories of Simeon, and the five northern tribes.

v1-9: Although the tribe of Judah was large (76,500 fighting men in Num 26.22), their inheritance was "more than they needed". Simeon, the smallest tribe (22,200 in Num 26.14), had its inheritance within Judah. Simeon's cities are listed within Judah's cities; see 15.20-32.

v15: In Zebulun's area was Bethlehem; this was not the Bethlehem in Judah (Mic 5.2); Scripture accurately specifies in which Bethlehem the Son of God was to be born.

v47: It was commendable that Dan extended their land.

We note that the areas for the seven tribes were much smaller than that for Judah. While Judah had more than 100 cities, Benjamin had 26, Zebulun 12, Issachar 16, Asher 22, Naphtali 19, and Dan 17.
