Bible Notes Online - 1-Kings 9 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: The Lord's second appearance to Solomon, around 20 years after the first. The first half of Solomon's reign was marked by peace and security and construction.

v3: The Lord had heard Solomon's prayer, 8.22-53; His Name would remain at the temple.

v4-5: Future blessing upon Solomon depended on his obedience to God. The specific blessing would be a never ending dynasty.

v6-9: There would be consequences of disobedience, by Solomon himself, or by any of his descendants.

Israel would be removed from the land, and scattered amongst the peoples, and ridiculed by them. Their disobedience and folly would be made apparent by their removal from the land. The emphasis is upon the physical and earthly consequences of disobedience.

v10-14: Solomon gave Hiram, king of Tyre, 20 towns in Galilee, in response to Hiram provided much for the temple and Solomon's palace. Hiram, however, was unimpressed. It is to be noted that the places where the Lord Jesus Christ lived and worked were despised.

v15-19: Solomon had cities fortified throughout Israel as a defensive measure. Hazor, Megiddo, and Gezer were within the northern kingdom after the division under Rehoboam; such defences proved useless when the attack came from within. We are called not to be ignorant of Satan's schemes, and one of his schemes is to create internal division.

Reliance upon Pharaoh put Solomon in his debt; this continuing alliance and dependence was unwise.

v20-21: Solomon conscripted the remaining Canaanites in the land as forced labour for the construction of the temple and his palace. He thus ensured that they were subdued. As the Judges discovered, these people had a continuing influence in Israel, since they had not been destroyed.

v22-23: The people of Israel were not used as slaves; those belonging to Israel kept dignity in their service.

v24: Pharaoh's daughter came upon to Solomon's palace, and Solomon built the Millo (supporting terraces), see v15.

v25: Solomon continued to offer sacrifices of worship to God.

v26-28: Solomon had ships built, which developed trade, and further enriched Solomon's kingdom.
