Bible Notes Online - 1-Kings 7 - ESV
Commentary

v1: Solomon's errors were initially not significant of themselves, but they contributed to his later downfall, and to the division of his kingdom. We must be careful about 'little things', and not tolerate 'minor sins'.

Solomon took 13 years to complete his own house, compared to 7 years to complete the temple. It is clear which was the greater; 2 Chr 2.9, "the temple...shall be great and wonderful". No doubt the temple was built to honour God, but Solomon's house clearly honoured him. Where are our priorities and commitments?

v2-12: The Palace of the Forest of Lebanon, 100 cubits x 50 x 30; four times larger than the temple. Although the Bible gives only a few verses here to Solomon's house, compare to four chapters (ch 5-8), it is clear that Solomon did not share God's priorities; he was not a man after God's own heart.

The Hall of Justice was significant, since people would see him there, and they would see that it was part of a building greater than the temple.

Also here was Solomon's own house, and a house for Pharoah's daughter. Such a contrast with David's attitude, "Here I am, living in a palace of cedar, while the ark of God remains in a tent".

v13-14: God gave Solomon Hiram (or Huram) a skilled workman. Compare Bezalel (Ex 31.2-5).

v15-45: Items made of bronze; pillars, the Sea with oxen, 10 lavers. They are summarised in v41-45. The weight of bronze used was undetermined (v47).

v46: As with the stone, the bronze items were cast in a place away from the temple site, and brought to the temple.

v47: The gold and silver were weighed, but not the bronze.

v48-50: Many other items for the temple were made of gold.

v51: David had also dedicated many items, spoil from battles, tribute from foreign kings, etc.
