Bible Notes Online - 1-Kings 6 - ESV
Commentary

v1: Solomon began to build the temple 480 years after the people of Israel had left Egypt, a reminder of God's deliverance.

v2-4: The dimensions of the temple; 60 cubits long, 20 wide, and 30 high; compared with 30 x 10 x 10 for the tabernacle. The temple was therefore much larger; it was permanent, not mobile; a pointer to the heavenly home for all who trust in Christ.

There was no detailed instructions given for the design of the temple; for us, there is much teaching about our behaviour and attitudes on earth, but little to indicate what is expected of us in heaven.

v5-6: Side rooms inside the structure; places for priests inside the temple.

v7: There was reverence for the things of God, in that no iron tool was used at the temple site.

v8-10: The temple had three floors, each 5 cubits high, with side rooms in each.

v11-13: God gave His promises to Solomon, dependent upon him remaining obedient. The temple would not guarantee God's future blessing, but it would be the place to be associated with that blessing.

v14-18: The floors were panelled. Inside the tabernacle there was no floor except the ground, a reminder of sin. In Heaven, there will be no memory of sin.

The Holy of Holies was partitioned off, as a separate place.

v19-22: The whole of the interior was covered with gold. See also v28, 30, 32.

v23-28: In the inner sanctuary, the Holy of Holies, were two cherubim, heavenly beings, overshadowing the ark of God which would be placed there.

v29-30: Cherubim were carved on the walls throughout the temple.

v31-35: Instead of the veil and curtain, separating the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies, there were doors of olive wood and pine wood. On each were carved cherubim, palm trees, and open flowers.

v36: The inner courtyard was around the temple.

v37-38: The construction of the temple was a large project, taking seven years to complete.
