Bible Notes Online - 2-Kings 8 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Elisha's warning had preceded the events of ch 5-7; the incident of the Shunammite woman ends in 4.37. It is Gehazi's audience with the king that is placed after the siege was raised. The woman had obeyed Elisha's words, and God had blessed her.

We see too that the blessings of God through Elisha continued even in his absence.

v3-5: Gehazi and the king wee talking about Elisha's miracles; so many speak of spiritual things while remaining ignorant of God's power in their lives.

Even so, the appearance of the Shunammite woman and her son was testimony to Gehazi's words. Such personal testimony could not be denied.

v6: The timing of the woman's arrival at the palace meant that her land was restored to her. Again, her obedience to Elisha had proved to be a blessing.

v7-15: See Amos 1.3-5; Jer 49.23-27; future judgment upon Aram (Syria) for her cruelty to Israel. Hazael was a cruel and deceitful man.

v16-29: The kings of Judah began to follow the ways of the kings of Israel. A particular development was that, for the first time, the kings were related to each other.
