Bible Notes Online - 2-Kings 12 - ESV
Commentary

v1-3: Jehoiada exercised a good influence upon Joash. Yet is seems likely that Joash came to depend on him too much. Although idolatry had been destroyed, the high places were not removed.

v4-5: Joash took the initiative to have the temple repaired. This reflects his love for God, and his recognition of the importance of corporate worship. In any work of the Lord, we must repair the damages, and restore His work.

v6-8: The priests had not been as diligent as they ought to have been; the work, although both urgent and important, had been neglected; and neglect here would have serious implications for the nation as a whole.

v9-12: The priests, who had already collected much money, handed over the money to those skilled workmen.

v13-14: The was a proper priority; money was not expended on smaller utensils used in worship, but in repairing the fabric of the temple.

v15-16: Those men who were involved in the work were men of honesty, and no detailed account was required of how they spent the money.

v17-18: In response to the attack from Hazael, Joash took the sacred objects dedicated by his forefathers, and sent them to Hazael. Such a course of action is a disappointment in one who showed such love for God.

v19-21: Unusually for a king of Judah, Joash was assassinated by his officials.
