Bible Notes Online - Zechariah 14 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Again, armies attacking Jerusalem; this is the day of the Lord. This time the city will be captured.

v3-5: The Lord comes to fight against the nations; His is the victory, without any assistance from man; just as He has won our salvation "by Himself" (Heb 1.3). Here is the Lord's coming with His saints, Jude 14; Rev 20.4-6.

v6-7: A unique day, of which no man knows the day or hour, Mark 13.32-35, but known to the Lord.

v8: There will be geographical and physical changes, as the Mount of Olives is split asunder, v4; the rivers run eastward and westward from Jerusalem.

v9: The Lord Himself will be king over all the earth; the stone of Dan 2.35,44 fills the whole earth.

v10: More geographical changes, as the area around Jerusalem will become a plain, from Geba (38 miles north of Jerusalem) to Rimmon (35 miles south west of the city). This may be consistent with the division of land in Ezek 48.

v11: Safety in Jerusalem, and all enmity ended. The city will be restored to its greatness and dominion.

v12-15: Destruction upon Gentile nations which attack Jerusalem. Their glory will be brought into the city, Rev 21.24.

v16-21: The Feast of Tabernacles;

  • announced by the trumpet, Lev 23.23-25;
  • where atonement is made, Lev 23.26-32.

By this time, the gospel will have been preached to all nations, and the fullness of the Gentiles reached, Rom 11.25.

The Lord's house and the sacrifices are restored, as in Ezekiel. There is the imposition of holiness, as God's character is clearly proclaimed.
