Bible Notes Online - Leviticus 9 - ESV
Commentary

Ex 4.16, "You (Moses) shall be to him (Aaron) as God"; something of this relationship continued, as Moses directed the consecration of the priests. Once started, it should have continued as each High Priest anointed his successor. Only in Christ does the line finish. Christ is the 'final' High Priest.

v1-4: After the seven days (8.33-35), Aaron's ministry begins. On the eighth day, the day of resurrection there was offering for the sins of the people (v3), and the Lord met with them in a special way. No one was exempt from being prepared to meet with God.

v5-6: The glory of the Lord was to appear before all the people, not just a select few. The privilege of closeness with God is for all who know Him.

v7: Aaron had to make atonement for himself and his sons (v5-14), and for the people (v15-21).

v22: There was a slope not steps, up to the altar (Ex 20.26); the altar was nearly 5 feet high (Ex 27.1).

v23-24: As in 1 Kings 8.10-11, there was a sign of God's approval. Whilst God had said He would always be present amongst His people, in this moment, He made Himself present in a more powerful way.
