Bible Notes Online - Hosea 3 - ESV
Commentary

v1: The story of Hosea and Gomer. Although she had left him, and therefore suffered for her unfaithfulness, he was commanded to love her again, and to bring her back to himself. In the illustration, the blessings upon Israel are dependent only upon God. This is not a marriage of convenience, or of political strategy, but real love for the unlovely.

This verse is a strong link between the love of Hosea for Gomer, and the love of God for Israel.

v2: There is a cost, redemption at a price. The Lord bought Israel for Himself; later, through Christ, He bought the church for Himself. Hosea has to buy his wife from the slave market, paying a price to regain ownership.

v3: Back forever, but with commitment on both sides. Hosea is firm with Gomer, 'You must stay with me.' Gomer, now redeemed, will stay faithful, and has every reason to do so. True love comes with real discipline.

v4: Referring to the current state of Israel, without king or prince. In Dan 8.11, the sacrifices are taken away.

Although there was a partial fulfilment when Zerubbabel, Ezra, and Nehemiah brought many back to Judah, including some from other tribes, the final and fuller fulfilment is yet to be.

v5: Future restoration of Israel; there will be a fresh desire to know the Lord.
