Bible Notes Online - Ezra 6 - ESV
Commentary

v1-5: Cyrus' decree had been preserved and was found; Prov 21.1; Esth 6.1-2. Again, it is clear that the Lord God overruled in developments.

v6-7: The edict of Darius, giving protection to the Jews by insisting that Tattenai and his officials stay away.

v8-10: Darius went further, and directed that provision be made for the construction work, and for the animal sacrifices. Any schemes to prevent the work were thus frustrated, and tax revenues had to be sent to provide financially. Such is God's power over pagan rulers.

Darius' intention was that worship and prayer be continued.

v11-12: Although the Jewish people had no direct influence over the wording of the decree, there was a clear statement warning others from attacking them.

v13: Tattenai carried out Darius' orders diligently. Doubtless, Darius had appointed Tattenai, knowing his loyalty to the king.

v14-18: With this fresh impetus, the temple was completed, being finished some 20 years after Cyrus' original decree. The Jews celebrated the completion of the temple.

v19-22: The Jews then celebrated the Passover together. Those who had separated themselves from unclean practices were eligible to share the Passover; the important principle of separation was maintained.

This was a time of unmixed joy, contrast 3.12-13 where joy and sorrow were mixed.
