Bible Notes Online - Acts 27 - ESV
Commentary

v1-12: The beginning of the journey. Like Joseph in prison, Paul is trusted by his captors, and allowed a measure of freedom; 24.23; 28.16.

The fast (v9) - a reference to the Day of Atonement. So significant was this day in the Jewish year that Paul, brought up in the Jewish faith needed only to use this description. It was the only feast when the people fasted.

Sailing in the first century; and the danger of ignoring warnings, Heb 2.1. It is understandable that the centurion is more persuaded by the helmsman and the boat owner; but really they should know the risks of travelling at that time. Even so, God has promised that Paul will testify in Rome, and that cannot fail. We note that Paul was something of an ‘expert’ on shipwrecks! See 2 Cor 11.25.

v13-20: Initially, it seems that Paul is proved wrong, with the "gentle south wind," but soon things change dramatically, with the "north-easter" hurricane driving them along. Many ignore the counsel of God and of godly men, and suffer the consequences.

In v15, the word "driven" is also used in 2 Pet 1.21; holy men driven by the Holy Spirit to write the scriptures.

After many days of enduring the storm, which seems particularly severe, the men have lost hope. They are utterly impotent; but Paul knows the Lord, and His word cannot be broken; he is immortal until his life's work is done. By Paul's faith, and the promises of God, many are blessed and saved.

v21-26: Paul's message the crew and passengers; 'you should have listened to me.' Here is a bold stand, demonstrating an unembarrassed confidence in God. He refers to God's clear promise of safety, "not one of you will be lost." Paul lives the gospel as well as preaching it.

v27-32: As they approach land, there is a madcap scheme for a few to escape. But Paul brings a clear truth; safety is only in the ship, until it is driven aground.

Noah found the same experience; there was life only in the ark, and only death outside. There is life only in Christ, and only death apart from Him.

v33-38: The need for nourishment; just as we need spiritual food to endure the difficulties of life. The whole number is encouraged. Paul continues his public testimony, giving thanks for the food in the midst of the people. See John 6.23, which refers to the Lord Jesus giving thanks. This is a clear testimony of faith in Christ.

v39-44: As daylight arrived, the crew see nearby land, which they reach. The soldiers' plan to kill the prisoners is quickly overturned. Everyone safely reaches shore; God's word is fulfilled.
