Bible Notes Online - Amos 6 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: Idleness, complacency, and false security; the people think that, as God's chosen people, they would receive unlimited blessings. Yet Israel is no better than some of the surrounding nations, although she was called to be an example to them, Ex 9.15. Amos continues to describe their complacency, in v3-7.

v3: They do not accept that the "evil day" is near, being ignorant of their guilt before God, and the imminence of punishment.

v4-5: They continue their life of luxury and rest; comfortable beds, lavish food, music diversions. Sung worship, insituted by David centuries before, had now become meaningless. It was now music without worship.

v6: The "ruin of Joseph;" for all is not well. They are ignorant of their own depravity.

v7: The rich and complacent cannot avoid exile.

v8: The oath of God, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

v9-11: The devastation about to come will make them ashamed to even mention the name of the Lord.

v12-13: The folly of the life of disobedience; contrasting 5.24; they neglect righteousness and justice.

v14: Defeat at the hands of Assyria is God's work; this is the coming judgment.
