Bible Notes Online - 2-Samuel 10 - ESV
Commentary

v1-2: David again wanted to show kindness to others. This time he was frustrated by the bad attitude of others.

v3-4: The problem came from the Ammonite nobles, who influenced Hanun, and made him dishonour David's messengers.

v5: David left his messengers at Jericho, the first main city they came to after returning to Israel.

v6: The Ammonites realised the folly of their actions. They expected that David would respond militarily, and they gathered an army together. It is not clear that David would have attacked Ammon; his only similar response was to Nabal's insults, many years before.

v7-12: Ammon's strategy was to split their army into two, and attack Israel from two directions. Joab similarly divided his army, to counter both threats. He looked to the Lord God to give victory; doubtless this was due to the influence of David's godly character.

v13-14: The armies hired by Ammon fled; they were hired servants, see John 10.10. Joab did not pursue the armies; his role was to protect Israel, and his job was done. Later they did attack Ammon (11.1).

v15-16: The Arameans (Syrians) regrouped, having been part of the force hired against Israel.

v17-19: David responded to the new threat. He routed the army. Kings who had previously been vassals of Hadadezer now brought tribute to David. The Arameans would not help the Ammonites fight Israel again.
